The abstract:

Online Social Networks (OSN) face serious scalability challenges due to their rapid growth and popularity. To address this issue we present a novel approach to scale up OSN called One Hop Replication (OHR). Our system combines partitioning and replication in a middleware to transparently scale up a centralized OSN design, and therefore, avoid the OSN application to undergo the costly transition to a fully distributed system to meet its scalability needs.

OHR exploits some of the structural characteristics of Social Networks: 1) most of the information is one-hop away, and 2) the topology of the network of connections among people displays a strong community structure. We evaluate our system and its potential benefits and overheads using data from real OSNs: Twitter and Orkut. We show that OHR has the potential to provide out-of-the-box transparent scalability while maintaining the replication overhead costs in check.

The OHR system is composed of two components: the controller and the middleware.

http://www.cs.cornell.edu/projects/ladis2009/talks/dean-keynote-ladis2009.pdf

Paul Buchheit surfaced a paper: A practical scalable distributed B-tree by Marcos K. Aguilera and Wojciech Golab, that might help spark a revolution.

This paper points the way to do some really cool things at a system level:

It’s distributed so it can scale dynamically in size and handle writes in parallel.

It supports adding and dropping servers dynamically, which is an essential requirement for architectures based on elastic cloud infrastructures.

Data can be migrated to other nodes, which is essential for maintenance.

Multiple records can be involved in transactions which is essential for the complex data manipulations that happen in real systems. This is accomplished via a version number mechanism that looks something like MVCC.

Optimistic concurrency, that is, the ability to change data without explicit locking, makes the job for programmers a lot easier.

◆ Introduction

PRIMA is the leading scientific conference for research on intelligent agent systems and multi-agent systems, attracting high quality, state-of-the-art research from all over the world. The conference endeavors to bring together researchers, developers, and academic and industry leaders, active and interested in agents and multi-agent systems, their practices and related areas. The conference is specifically focused on becoming the premier forum for prototype and deployed agent systems. The conference offers an exceptional opportunity for presentation of original work, technological advances, practical problems and concerns of the research community.

PRIMA2009 will build on the success of its predecessor workshops and conferences held in Hanoi, Bangkok, Guilin, Kuala Lumpur, Auckland, Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, Melbourne, Kyoto, and Singapore. Since 2007, due to the need for an additional high-quality forum for international researchers and practitioners to meet and share their work, the meeting has been expanded from a workshop to a full-fledged conference.

Cambridge.Dynamical.Processes.On.Complex.Networks.Nov.2008.ebook

distributed cache

semantic web

http://microformats.org/

Computer Science is not merely about computers and programming,it is about mathematically modeling our world, and about ….

p1 *(coll freq) + p2 * ( n of docs / coll freq )

http://search.twitter.com/

Trending topics: Jade Goody, #musicmonday, Redoubt, Player Snapshot,

Excellent Photoshop, Fern, BBC, IE8, Earth Hour, Why Advertising Is

2.这周主题是 the term vocabulary and postings lists

This is the companion website for the following book.

Christopher D. Manning, Prabhakar Raghavan and Hinrich Schütze, Introduction to Information Retrieval, Cambridge University Press. 2008.

You can order this book at CUP, at your local bookstore or on the internet. The best search term to use is the ISBN: 0521865719.

The book aims to provide a modern approach to information retrieval from a computer science perspective. It is based on a course we have been teaching in various forms at Stanford University and at the University of Stuttgart.

We’d be pleased to get feedback about how this book works out as a textbook, what is missing, or covered in too much detail, or what is simply wrong. Please send any feedback or comments to: informationretrieval (at) yahoogroups (dot) com

Apart from small differences (mainly concerning copy editing and figures), the online editions should have the same content as the print edition.
